About Me
Hello everyone. My name is Sara Zhang. I'm currently an undergraduate student at Indiana University, and I'm majoring in mathematics education. I am also a member of IU's education program Community of Teachers, a program which allows pre-service educators to have more hands-on experience working in the classroom. And as part of this hands-on experience, I work along with students and a mentor at Bloomington High School North.
As a pre-service educator, I love having the opportunity to work with students and to gain experience in any way I can. That's way I became interested in becoming a facilitator for GALACTIC's Global Arts Infusion Workshop. The concept of using art to discuss global issues intrigues, and I'm excited to work with all the students as they come up with creative ideas!
Personally, my interests in the global arts is with foreign languages and visual art. At IU, I am minoring in Mandarin Chinese. And although I'm not the most active in producing art, I do have a love for drawing and crocheting. They're hobbies that I hope to pick back up in my free time! So given my own interests in art, I'm eager to find out how these lessons will develop for the workshop.

Hello Sara. I'm also interested in language and visual art. I am fascinated by the idea of a culture developing a system of pictorial language and how it evolves over time. I love how characters can evolve from pictures of actual things to take on a life of their own with a beautiful and often stylish aesthetic. In this same vain, I am interested in all types of symbolism and how complex ideas, emotions, and a point of view can be expressed in a beautiful, artistic, and aesthetically pleasing way.
ReplyDeleteI think Chinese Calligraphy and ink painting may be a fun art form to explore with your students to tie in your interests. I'm not sure if that would fit with your theme, but just a thought.
Hello Sara! I teach in an elementary school very close to Bloomington High School North. Although I went through the education program at IU, I've never heard of the Community of Teachers, I'd love to know more about that. I hope you're enjoying your preservice experiences. Do you know what area in math you might want to focus on teaching when you're finished with your program?
ReplyDeleteIn general, I'd like to work in a high school setting since I think it's a crucial time when students are learning math. As for what area in math, I'd like a mixture of classes for younger and older high school students, something like Algebra or Algebra II.
